Here’s something a lot of new drivers don’t find out until it’s too late: the type of truck you take your skills test in decides which trucks you’re legally allowed to drive.<\/strong> Test in an automatic, and your CDL comes with a restriction that limits you to automatics. It’s a small detail with a real impact on your options, so it’s worth understanding before you start.<\/p>\n

What the “E” restriction is<\/h2>\n

Cuando apruebas tu examen pr\u00e1ctico de CDL en un cami\u00f3n con transmisi\u00f3n autom\u00e1tica<\/strong>, tu licencia se emite con el c\u00f3digo de restricci\u00f3n “E”<\/strong> – “no manual transmission.” It means exactly what it sounds like: you can only operate commercial vehicles with automatic (or automated) transmissions. If you take the test in a manual<\/strong> , no recibes esa restricci\u00f3n y puedes conducir cualquiera de los dos tipos.<\/p>\n

The restriction isn’t permanent. If you start with an automatic and later want to remove the “E,” you can re-take the skills test in a manual truck. But that’s an extra test and extra cost down the road, so it’s better to make the choice deliberately the first time.<\/p>\n
